Vietravel Airlines, owned by Vietnam's leading tour operator Vietravel, plans to launch its first commercial flight on December 18th 2020, CEO Nguyen Quoc Ky told a conference on Thursday.

The first flights will be conducted domestically following efforts to complete the procedures amid Covid-19 pandemic. Domestic market will be the key market of the newly-established air carrier, according to a report NDH business news website.

Though the Covid-19 pandemic hit the Vietnam aviation market, Vietravel Airlines still sees opportunity in the market. This is not a big challenge because Vietravel Airlines is small and the market is available.

The airline plans to operate three to four aircraft in the first year, with expansion of the fleet to six aircraft in the second year, 8 to 10 aircraft within five years, and 20 to 30 aircraft after that.

Vietravel Airlines already organized charter flights, and will enter a fiercely competitive aviation market with other five competitors including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Jetstar Pacific, Vietnam Air Services Company, and Bamboo Airways.

Vietravel, the parent company, is expected to help the new air carrier in developing market. the group was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Vietravel's number of customers fell by 70 percent and revenue in 2020 would be only 20-22 percent compared to last year.
