Business community supports farmers amid coronavirus outbreak

Local and foreign companies in Vietnam purchased tonnes of watermelons to help farmers when agricultural exports are facing difficulties due to the acute respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Following Phu Nhuan Jewelry, An Cuong, Hung Thinh, Deloitte, Phuc Khang Investment and Construction JSC has supported farmers in Gia Lai province by consuming 20 tons of watermelon.

The farm produce was distributed free of charge in Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Binh, Binh Tan districts, the company's employees, residents at Diamond Lotus Riverside, and children at La Vang Shelter last week.

Responding the encouragement from the Vietnam Young Entrepreneurs Association and the Red Star Club, Luu Thi Thanh Mau, general director of Phuc Khang company and other businesses at the association decided to buy farm produces directly affected by the crisis.

Member businesses have consumed more than 100 tons of watermelons. Phuc Khang Company alone purchased 20 tons and received the enthusiastic support of all employees in the company.

Mau suggested Vietnamese farmers and companies to learn from other countries in East Asian region including Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, which have been successfully built a production chains for qualified products.

With a clear and transparent production process from the farm to dining table, the products can easily access new market whenever there is crisis, she said, adding Vietnam Government should have policy to boost domestic consumption and improve product quality.

If Vietnamese agricultural products meet international standard, they can be exported to other countries if they are not exported to China, Mau said.

Earlier, the embassy of Qatar purchased four tonnes of watermelon to help farmers in Vietnam’s central region.

The farm produce was distributed free of charge in Hanoi on February 11.
