Vietnam’s 2020 FDI inflow falls 25% to $28.53 billion

Foreign investment from new capital registration, capital adjustment, share purchasing in 2020 was seen at $28.53 billion, down 25 percent from a year ago, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
 

As of December 20, 2020, disbursed capital of foreign direct investment projects was estimated at $19.98 billion, down 2 percent from the same period of 2019 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Production and business activities were affected, but several foreign-invested enterprises have been gradually recovering and maintaining good production activities and expanding projects.

Remarkably, the adjusted capital in 2020 rose 10.6 percent to $6.4 billion.

Regarding the newly registered capital, there were 2,523 new projects granted investment registration certificates, a decrease of 35 percent over the same period, the total registered capital reached $14.65 billion, down 12.5 percent.

Foreign investors have invested in 19 fields, in which the processing and manufacturing industry ranked first with total investment capital of $13.6 billion, accounting for 47.7 percent of total registered investment capital.

Electricity production and distribution ranked second with total investment capital of over $5.1 billion, accounting for 18 percent of total registered investment capital. Real estate, wholesale and retail has registered capital of nearly $4.2 billion and $1.6 billion respectively.

In 2020, 112 countries and territories invested in Vietnam. Singapore is the largest investor with a total investment of $9 billion, accounting for 31.5 percent of total investment

South Korea ranked second with a total investment of over $3.9 billion, accounting for 13.8 percent of total investment capital. China ranked third with a total registered investment capital of $2.46 billion, accounting for 8.6 percent of total investment capital.

In terms of the number of new projects, Korea ranked first with 609 projects. China ranked second with 342 projects. Japan ranked third with 272 projects. Hong Kong ranked fourth with 211 projects.
