The Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien Metro Line aims to start trial operations in Long Binh Depot end of this year, when the first three carriages were transported to the depot on weekend.

The carriages will be installed to the track at Long Binh depot in the city’s District 9. It is expected that the trains will be operated inside the depot end of this year before a comprehensive test, said Hoang Mai Tung, coordinating engineer of the Metro Line 1 project.

However, the time for testing the route of 17 kilometers overhead and 2.6 kilometers tunnel has not been decided.

More carriages will be sent to the city soon. The contractor Hitachi is producing the remaining 48 carriages for the metro line.

In 2013, the Ho Chi Minh City Railway Management Board and Hitachi (Japan) signed the contract of procurement of electromechanical equipment, locomotives, rails and maintenance) for the metro route.

This is one of the most important bidding packages of the project, with a total value of about $700 million, in the total investment of VND43,757 billion ($1.9 billion).

The other components of the project will be sped up in the coming months, including the installation of the railway and electrical systems as well as other equipment at the stations, aiming to meet 85% of the target for the project’s workload by end-2020 and put it into operation in 2021.
