Although ministries, sectors, and enterprises are attempting to remove trans-border e-commerce hurdles, Vietnamese firms still face several challenges.

Ministries, sectors, and businesses are addressing barriers to removing barriers in trans-border e-commerce activities, which have been beneficial for Vietnam's export revenue, with a value of over VND80 trillion ($3.28 billion) in 2022.

Amazon reported that Vietnamese firms sold 17 million product units globally in 12 months, with a 40% increase in Amazon partners and a 50% increase in export value. Meanwhile, Alibaba reported a 47% year-on-year expansion in trans-border e-commerce trade value for Vietnamese small and medium-sized enterprises in the first nine months of 2023.

Indochina Creative Investment and Development JSC, which has been selling its products on Alibaba since September 2015, has benefited from e-commerce as it has been able to reach global customers quickly.

Alibaba Vietnam's Marketing Director, Nguyen Thi Phuong Uyen, stated that many Vietnamese enterprises are unable to utilize the export channel due to language barriers, a lack of marketing skills, and an understanding of digital trade regulations, along with logistics difficulties.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has organized activities to support domestic firms, particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises, in connecting with e-commerce platforms like Alibaba, TikTok, Amazon, Lazada, Tiki, Foodmap, Postmart, Voso, Shopee, and Sendo.

Particularly, the Vietnam Pavilion is scheduled to be launched on Alibaba in December with the participation of more than 100 businesses, he said.

Alibaba plans to collaborate with Vietnamese ministries and sectors to promote trade in over 200 countries, while Amazon Global Selling Vietnam aims to enhance connectivity between sellers and manufacturers, expand the Vietnamese product portfolio, and provide training for Vietnamese sellers in global trademark development.

The MoIT and e-commerce platforms will enhance the digital trade promotion ecosystem, diversify coordination with domestic and foreign platforms, and improve online export capacity for domestic businesses. Trade experts advise businesses to use digital technologies, enhance export capacity, and build their own trademarks to win customer confidence and promote sustainable trans-border e-commerce activities.
