Vietnam has suggested selling homegrown 5G equipment to the U.S., which refuses using technology from China’s Huawei Corp. for national security.

During Monday meeting with U.S. congress delegation in Hanoi, Vietnam’s Minister of Information and Telecommunication Nguyen Manh Hung suggested the United States to consider if made-in-Vietnam 5G equipment is eligible to enter the U.S. market.

The Minister proposed that the U.S. send a focal point to discuss with Vietnam on the development of these technical standards and test whether the 5G devices manufactured by Vietnam can enter the market.

A response to Minister Hung’s suggestion, Congressman Seth Moulton, Deputy Chairman of the Budget Committee, Member of the Committee of the US House of Representatives, said that the State acknowledges the recommendations of Vietnam and would have specific responses through the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam.

At the meeting, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung and Congressman Seth Moulton exchanged views on the situation of 5G technology development and briefed on the development orientation of 5G in Vietnam and the United States.

Vietnam plans to launch commercial 5G services this year. In ASEAN, Vietnam plays a leading role in developing 5G technology, news website cited the Vietnamese minister, who made the first video call using 5G on Viettel-made devices a few days before the meeting.

Currently, five companies have successfully produced network devices for 5G including Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Samsung and ZTE. Vietnam’s military-run Viettel will be the 6th supplier in the world to produce this device.

5G is expected to be an opportunity for Vietnam to upgrade its ranking in the world.
