Foreign tourists to Vietnam falls 68% in March due to coronavirus

Number of international arrivals to Vietnam in March 2020 decreased sharply by 63.8% against the previous month and 68.1% over the same period last year, according to data from General Statistics Office.

In the first 3 months of this year, international visitors to Vietnam reached nearly 3.7 million, a reduction of over 18% against the same period last year.

Travelers from Asia were reported at 2.67 million, down over 21% against the same period last year while number of travelers from Europe were estimated at 664,300, a decrease by 3.1%.

Visitors from America were estimated at 234,000, down 20% from a year ago, data said.

Revenue from travel tourism in the first quarter of 2020 is estimated at VND7.8 trillion ($239 million), accounting for 0.6% of the total retail sales of goods and consumer services.

Earlier, Vietnam estimated that the virus could wipe $7 billion off the country’s tourism industry.
