Vietnam imported 90,400 tonnes of pork and related products during the first nine months of 2020 with a value of $215 million, up 357 percent in volume and 460 percent in value.

Russia, Brazil, Canada, the United States, and Poland were the largest overseas sources of pork imported to Vietnam since early this year, Voice of Vietnam cited statistics released by the General Department of Customs.

At present, the country permits as many as 24 foreign countries to export meat, livestock, and poultry meat products to the Vietnamese market. Of these, more than 800 enterprises from 19 countries worldwide have been granted permission to export pork and pork products into the nation.

The total number of pigs nationwide in September witnessed a year-on-year increase of 3.6%. In addition, the total live-weight pork output during the opening nine months of the year is estimated to stand at 2.5 million tonnes, a drop of 3% from the same period last year.

This boost in the volume of imported pork has served to stabilise supply whilst reducing the price of live pigs in recent months. Currently, the price of live pigs is between VND66,000 and VND75,000 per kg, with this figure varying between each locality.
