Despite a negative growth of nearly 6% due to China reducing imports, the sector has shown promising signs with a 3% growth rate in the first month of 2023, reaching $300 million in exports.
The growth of the fruit and vegetable export industry is attributed to China reopening its doors from January 2023 and increasing imports of vegetables and fruits from Vietnam to serve domestic demand. Other demanding markets such as the US, EU, and Japan continue to maintain orders, supporting the industry's growth.
Vietnamese rambutan is among the key export items that have contributed to the sector's growth, with exports skyrocketing to $421 million in 2022, a 137% increase compared to the previous year. The rambutan fruit is being exported to various countries and territories, with China being the largest importer.
Dragon fruit, another leading export item, has the potential to pick up pace in 2023 with China's opening up. Bananas are also expected to bring in larger export values, thanks to the export decree signed with China in November 2022.
Other fruits are also taking advantage of opportunities from free trade agreements to increase exports. Vietnamese businesses showcased their products at the Fruit Logistica international exhibition of fruits and vegetables held in Berlin, Germany, attracting a large number of European customers.
With the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement in effect for nearly three years, exports of fruits and vegetables to the EU are expected to have many prospects as Vietnamese businesses standardize production, reduce transportation costs, and improve technology.
