Vietnam's coconut exports are expected to reach $1 billion in 2025 after the US and China agreed to let Vietnamese coconuts into their markets.

The official said that local companies are trying to meet the needs of the world market by making raw material areas, applying for growth area codes, and registering to build organic material zones. This is because the US is about to open its market to Vietnamese coconuts, and China has made it official that coconuts can be imported.

"Coconut exports made more than $700 million at the end of 2022. But if the US and China continue to agree to buy Vietnamese coconuts, exports could reach $1 billion by the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025, Thanh said.

Before, there were no plans for places with coconut trees. But in 2021, the fruit was put on a list of important economic foods for Vietnam, especially in light of climate change.

Thanh says that about 20 big businesses in the country have sent coconuts all over the world. As many as 35 countries and regions buy things from Vietnam.

Luu Van Phi, head of the Department of Industry and Trade in the southern province of Tien Giang, said that the province has more than 35,000 ha of coconut trees, mostly in the districts of Go Cong Tay, Cho Gao, My Tho, and Tan Phu Dong.

Phi said that sending coconuts to the US will help raise the price of the fruit, which will increase farmers' incomes and make them more likely to invest in coconut farming.

He said that a coconut costs between VND 3,000 and 4,000 ($0.12 to $0.17) on a farm, but people in Ho Chi Minh City have to pay VND 20,000.

The Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the southern province of Ben Tre, Huynh Quang Duc, said that the area covered by coconut trees is more than 15,000 ha.

About 10 businesses from inside and outside the state are signing up to get codes for planting areas and packing facilities so they can export coconut juice.
