Vietnam's auto imports surged by 218.9% in volume and 148.9% in value in January 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, according to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

The country imported 14,457 units of whole cars, worth a total of $314.5 million.

Thailand was the largest exporter of cars to Vietnam, with 6,693 units imported, worth $125.47 million. Meanwhile, 6,179 cars were imported from Indonesia, valued at $89.7 million. China ranked third, exporting 328 cars worth $11.26 million.

In addition, 432 units of whole cars were imported from the US, worth $28.4 million.

Last year, Vietnam set a record for auto sales with over 508,547 cars sold. This was a significant increase compared to previous years when the sales figures were around 300,000-400,000 cars per year. The country also imported a record number of cars in 2022, with 173,467 units imported, totaling $3.84 billion.

After the Vietnamese New Year in 2023, which is typically a slow period for car sales, some major automakers have launched promotional programs to boost demand. Honda, for example, is offering a 100% registration fee exemption for some of its car models imported from Japan.
