Travel bans to control the spread of coronavirus have wiped $60 billion of Vietnam’s tourism industry, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc told lawmakers on Monday morning.

The tourism industry have been badly damaged due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Under normal conditions, Vietnam could have welcomed 21 million international visitors this year with a turnover of over $60 billion.

“We accepted damages to protect people's health,” PM Phuc said.

In order maintain growth, the government had to allow investors, diplomats, skilled workers to enter the country with 14-day quarantine.

The pandemic is estimated to cost the country VND200 trillion ($8.6 billion) in State budget revenue this year.

Central province of Quang Nam reported a budget revenue drop of nearly VND4 trillion ($173 million) due to the decline in tourism revenue. Other major cities including Da Nang, Khanh Hoa, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City ... have also reported revenue drop, affecting economic development.

The Government has pursued different approaches to curb the pandemic with nationwide social distancing introduced in the first stage and quick zoning off hotspots since the outbreak of the second wave of COVID-19.

Thanks to effective containment of the pandemic, Viet Nam is one of the two Asia-Pacific economies to attain positive growth.

In addition, the country is listed among 16 most successful emerging economies in the world with many prospects to narrow the gap with developed countries amidst the COVID-19 epidemic, according to the Economist.

However, the country is facing unprecedented frequencies of natural disasters, causing huge impacts on the national economies.

The central region alone have been hit by prolonged heavy rains, which triggered historic flooding and deadly landslides between October 6 and 25 that caused at least 130 deaths.
