The extra 100,000 tonnes is the rice that had been transported to ports prior to March 24, when the government announced a ban on rice exports to make sure the country has sufficient food to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, Reuters cited information from the government.
On April 10, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked ministries to resume exporting rice 400,000 tonnes rice in April, but food security should be maintained.
The Vietnamese premier instructed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to closely follow and implement the rice export management and ensure national food security and maintain the production chain and good prices for farmers.
Earlier, the ministry proposed the Government to allow exporting 800,000 tonnes of rice in April and May since the country has enough rice reserves for food security.
For food security purposes, in April and May, the country has about 300,000 tonnes. It will have an additional 400 thousand tonnes of rice to face possible situations caused by the pandemic in April and May.
