Vietnam confirms ninth death linked to Covid-19, patient tally hits 717

Another Covid-19 patient has died of pneumonia, respiratory failure on the background of chronic adrenal insufficiency, raising Vietnam’s coronavirus death toll to nine, according to Ministry of Health.

Patient 651, aged 67, who is a resident of Duy Xuyen district in central province of Quang Nam, had suffered chronic renal failure, lupus erythematosus, type 2 diabetes mellitus, fungal blood infection before she passed.

The woman was rushed to the emergency department at the Department of Endocrinology in Da Nang Hospital on July 18 and later transferred to the Family Hospital in Da Nang.

She was confirmed to have contracted coronavirus on August 2. Two days later, the patient had respiratory failure, was intubated, ventilated.

She suffered deep coma, respiratory failure and died on August 6.

Vietnam has reported nine deaths. All were elderly people with underlying health problems such as end-stage chronic kidney failure, chemically unresponsive end-stage blood cancer, coronary syndrome, acute respiratory failure, and polyarthritis.

On the same day, the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control confirmed four new Covid-19 cases, bringing the patients tally to 717.

The latest cases include three in the central province of Quang Nam and one in Ha Noi.

Patient 714 is a 42-year old man from Phuc Dien Ward, Bac Tu Liem Disitrict, Ha Noi. He works as a public bus operator.

The man travelled to Da Nang with his family from July 14-17. Two days later, he developed mild fever and sore throat.

He was admitted to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ha Noi’s Dong Anh District and got his sample tested there.

Patients 715-717 are residents of Quang Nam, aged between 42 and 45. They came in contact with people who later tested positive for Covid-19.
