Three foreign firms to build $5-billion power plant in Vietnam

The power plant with total capacity of 3,200MW will be built in Tan Thanh commune, Ham Thuan Nam district.
Currently, the investors have completed the site selection survey and the pre-feasibility study for the project. It is expected that the plan will be submitted in December.
The investor group will get loan for 70% of the project fund from the United States Export-Import Bank, Facility Development Agency United States International Infrastructure and Deutsche Bank.
Recently, in the framework of the official visit to Vietnam by US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross and the recent US business delegation, representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and AES Group got nod to build the 2.2 GW combined cycle gas turbine Son My 2 plant under a 20-year build-operate-transfer contract with the government.
The plant is expected to begin commercial operations in 2024.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the plant will use $2 billion worth of liquefied natural gas per year when it comes into operation, helping balance Vietnam’s trade surplus with the U.S.
