Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) has announced its plans to open an office in Vietnam to tap into the Southeast Asian market.

The office, which will be the first overseas foray for the exchange, will aim to serve investors, including Taiwanese firms, from Vietnam and Thailand, and encourage them to invest in Taiwan.

TWSE will start working with foreign brokerages in Vietnam even before the opening of the office to raise funds for investment in Taiwan.

TWSE data showed that foreign institutional investors sold a net $42.86 billion in shares on Taiwan's stock market in 2022 due to a sell-off in tech stocks, but still accounted for over 40% of the market's capitalization, highlighting the importance of foreign investment.

TWSE Chairman, Sherman Lin, praised the sound fundamentals of companies listed on Taiwan's stock markets, noting that combined sales of companies listed on the main exchange and OTC market rose 5% for the year and pretax profit was up 9% in the first nine months of 2022.

TWSE will also recategorize its listed companies to keep up with the changing economy, introducing new categories such as digital, green energy, and sports/leisure sectors in June.

This move is expected to further boost the investment appeal of Taiwan's stock market to foreign investors.

The opening of the office in Vietnam marks a significant step for TWSE to attract investment from Southeast Asia and enhance the investment appeal of Taiwan's stock market. With its efforts to collaborate with foreign brokerages and adapt to the changing economy, TWSE is poised to attract more investment in the coming years.
