Samsung Electronics began construction of a $220 million research and development center in Vietnam’s Hanoi capital, the company said in a statement on Monday.

The center to be built on an area of 11,603 square meters is designed with 16 floors and 3 basements is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 and employ between 2,200 and 3,000 people.

This center is the first building built overseas by South Korea’s Samsung Electronics to serve the group's research and development.

The construction of the center was carried out shortly after two meetings between Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Samsung Group Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong in 2018 in Hanoi and 2019 in Seoul.

Being Vietnam’s largest single foreign investor, Samsung has been investing $17 billion in the country for the past 12 years, according to the company’s statement.

“The construction of a new research and development center is a strategic step in the investment history of Samsung in Vietnam. This realizes our commitment to contribute to the development of Vietnam's science and technology,” said Choi Joo Ho, General Director of Samsung Vietnam Complex.
