PV GAS has signed a Confirmation Notice with Shell, under which the latter will provide the first LNG shipment to Vietnam.

The signing is a milestone in the development of the PetroVietnam Gas Joint Stock Corporation (PV GAS) in particular and Vietnam’s gas industry in general.

In order to import LNG for the trial and commercial operation of the 1MMTPA LNG Warehouse in Thi Vai, southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, PV GAS issued Procurement Documents on April 27 and decided to select Shell as the supplier. Completing a test run and being put into operation, the Thi Vai LNG Warehouse will be the first and largest LNG warehouse in Vietnam, with a capacity in the first phase of 1 million tons a year, which will be expanded to 3-6 million tons a year.

The Thi Vai warehouse is capable of berthing LNG vessels of up to 100,000 tons, with the main items in the first phase including LNG storage tanks with a capacity of 180,000 cu m and technological equipment designed according to the latest versions of Vietnamese standards and regulations and international standards.

Once completed, the system will add about 1.4 billion cu m of gas supply to consumers such as the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 power plants and industrial customers, and will partially make up for gas shortages in the country after 2023.

The Thi Vai LNG terminal will be an important link in the supply of recycled gas to gas consumers. Along with investment in Son My LNG import terminal, which will have a total capacity of up to 10 million tons of LNG a year when completed, PV GAS’s LNG infrastructure will basically meet the future energy needs of the southern region.
