Pandemic economically hurts 31.8 million people in Vietnam

As many as 31.8 million Vietnamese have economically suffered from Covid-19 pandemic since early this year, according to a survey result released by the General Statistics Office on Tuesday.

The affected citizens aged above 15 have lost jobs and had salary cut from working hour reduce, GSO said.

The pandemic has caused the country’s labor force shrinking by 1.2 million workers to 54.4 million during the period.

When the country successfully controlled the virus and the economy recovered, the labor force in the third quarter was 54.6 million people, up 1.4 million people from the previous quarter but 1.1 million people lower than the same period last year.

After deep decline in the second quarter, the labor market is showing signs of recovery, but has not yet been able to recover to the state of the same period last year.

Unemployment rate in the third quarter was 2.5 percent, and 4 percent of the people lives in the urban area. Third quarter unemployment rate in urban areas remained the highest level in the past 10 years.

Generally, during the past nine months, unemployment rate was 2.48 percent, up 0.31 percentage points over the same period last year.
