Ninh Thuan to invest $2.1 bln in the first phase of Ca Na LNG-fueled power plant

The Ninh Thuan province plans to build its LNG power complex in Phuoc Diem commune, with the first phase to cost VND49 trillion ($2.1 billion), according to the provincial Party Committee.

The LNG Ca Na power plant which will have a capacity of 1,500 MW in the first phase of investment is expected to be put into operation in 2025 – 2026.

The project was designed to have a total capacity of 6,000 MW. The complex will comprise a LNG-fueled power plant using combined cycle gas turbine technology, a LNG import terminal with an annual capacity of 4.8 million tonnes, a warehouse with four 180,000-cu.m LNG storage tanks, and a storage regasification unit with capacity of 1.2 million tonnes each.

The first phase of the project will cover an area of 75 hectares, aiming to supply electricity to southern cities and provinces.

The project is expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2024. The site clearance task will be completed in the third quarter of 2021.

Recently, several large local and international investors are interested in LNG gas power investment in Vietnam, including Delta Offshore Energy, which invested $4 billion in Bac Lieu Liquefied Natural Gas Power Plant.

US-based Exxon Mobil also proposed to invest in a $5.09-billion LNG gas power plant in Hai Phong. Japan’s Marubeni Group proposed to invest in $2.7-billion LNG Long Son Gas Power Plant with a total expected capacity of about 4,800 MW.

Local firms including Vingroup, T&T Group, Hoanh Son Group, Trung Nam Group… are also looking to invest in LNG gas power projects.
