The government of Vietnam’s biggest city is drafting a plan to build eight logistics centers scattering around the city between 2020 and 2030.

The investment requires an estimated VND9.07 trillion ($3.92 billion) to develop the logistics system through 2030.

During 2020 – 2025 period, the city needs an investment of VND1,136 billion ($49 million), said Pham Thanh Kien, director of the municipal Department of Trade and Industry during a recent conference held to discuss the development of the city’s industry.

Ho Chi Minh City should draft a master plan to develop its logistics sector, Kien said, adding the city should learn from other countries to develop the industry into one of its major sectors.

With developed logistics system, the cost of logistics could be reduced to 16 percent of the country’s GDP by 2025, he added.

Researchers for the project to develop the city’s logistics industry have carried out a fact-finding tours of eight locations where the city’s logistics centers would be built.

They include the Dong Nam Industrial Park in Cu Chi District, Tan Kien Port in Binh Chanh District, Cat Lai Industrial Park in District 2, Long Binh ICD in District 9, Cu Chi ICD in Cu Chi District, Phu Dinh Port in District 8, Linh Trung Export Processing Zone in Thu Duc District, and Long Thoi Commune in Nha Be District where the logistics center of the Hiep Phuoc Port Urban Zone will be built.

Relevant agencies have also suggested the public – private partnership model for developing infrastructure. The investment model would be implemented with 5 common forms including construction – transfer, build - rent – transfer, build - operate – transfer, build - transfer - operate and build - own - operate.

Depending on the stage and scale of construction, the city will choose the appropriate cooperation models. The project is under considered by the People’s Committee.
