In 2022, Cambodia exported 670,000 tons of raw cashew nuts to the international market, worth $1.07 billion, with 98.5% of the exports sold to Vietnam.
The raw cashew nuts from Cambodia are one of the main sources of cashew processing in Vietnam.
Cambodia has recently issued a national policy on cashew nuts with the aim of improving production and competitiveness, promoting industrialization and increasing post-harvest and processing value, and diversifying exports.
On the other hand, Vietnam is the leading country in terms of raw cashew imports worldwide and imports about 1.9 million tons of cashew raw materials annually, spending $2.66 billion in total.
The main source of cashew nuts for Vietnam is Cambodia and African countries, including Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania.
However, the domestic area of cashew growing in Vietnam is only about 300,000 hectares, which provides only 30% of the raw materials for businesses.
To address this issue, the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) has proposed to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to assess, stabilize, and plan the cashew growing areas.
In case of difficulty in increasing the domestic area, Vinacas has proposed to cooperate in exploiting and developing cashew material areas in Cambodia and Southern Laos
