Accounting for 70 percent of food for the Vietnamese, it is likely that the domestic market will face a shortage of 500,000 tons of pork as African swine flu has killed 4.7 million hogs nationwide.
During the past months, local consumers witnessed unexpected hike in pork price in the market due to the decline in supply amid increasing demand. Pork shortage and rising prices are unavoidable after the African swine flu spread in all of provinces and cities of the country.
The total number of pigs nationwide has decreased by 18% compared to the end of 2018.
When the epidemic happened, a few farmers dared to continue breeding pigs. Capital shortfall is another reason. Shortage in pork supply in the market is expected to last longer.

The Lunar New Year is coming in four months, and the shortage will certainly put significant pressure on the food market. The government is seeking alternative pork sources to stabilize the market. However, this solution is not to be easily implemented.
Like other countries in Asia, most of households in Vietnam choose pork as the main source of protein. Currently, the production of cattle including cows, goats and sheep accounts for only 8% of Vietnam's total meat. Meanwhile, pork accounts for 70% and chicken up to 20%. This configuration is similar to that one in other countries in the region.
During meetings to discuss for pork market solutions, local authorities suggested to promote animal husbandry, especially cow breeding.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development expects that beef supply will increase by 5% to offset the shortage of pork.
During the next five years, breeding cattles, mainly cows will increase by 10-15%. However, increasing the herd will rely on decision of farmers.
