Vietnam imported 109,000 cars in the first nine months of this year, an increase of nearly 168%.

Cars from Thailand and Indonesia accounted for the majority of cars imported since early this year. Of the total imported cars, 94,300 pieces were from Thailand and Indonesia, according to data from General Department of Customs.

In September, the number of cars imported from Thailand reached 5,500 cars while cars from Indonesia reached 3,700, mainly passenger cars and pickup trucks.

ASEAN-imported cars have held up to 90% of the country’s imported car number since early 2018 when zero import tariffs applied to ASEAN-imported cars took effect.

Most imported cars are from brands such as Toyota, Honda, Ford and Mitsubishi, particularly models with high sale numbers as Honda CRV, Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Xpander, or Ford Ranger, among others.

Vietnam’s car import value is expected to reach $2 billion this year with roughly 130,000 cars to be imported.

To improve the situation, the ministry has proposed solutions to support domestic car manufacturers, including not applying special consumption tax for vehicles which are locally-produced, as part of efforts to reduce the price of cars.
