Vietnam’s Phu Quoc eyes deeper cooperation with South Korea

The People’s Committee of Phu Quoc City greeted a delegation of officials from Yeonsu District in South Korea’s Incheon City, seeking to boost two-way cooperation in various fields.

“Phu Quoc City expects to strengthen the partnership with Yeonsu District, mainly in tourism, to fuel the growth of the two localities,” said Huynh Quang Hung, chairman of the Phu Quoc City People’s Committee.

Phu Quoc, known as the 'pearl island’ of Vietnam, is home to some 38 islands and boasts stunning landscapes, including nearly 300 tourism projects being developed with a total pledged capital of VND399 trillion (US$17 billion).

These projects will provide 30,000 hotel rooms, including 16,000 high-end units.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Phu Quoc City, which is one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist attractions, welcomed some 2.5-3 million visitors a year. In 2022, over two million travelers visited the city.

Yeonsu District mayor Lee Jae Ho said that Phu Quoc has a lot of potential for tourism development.

Many South Korean firms see the island city as an attractive investment destination, which offers many incentives to local and international investors.

The representative of the South Korean delegation hoped that the two sides would foster cooperation in education, economy, and tourism, contributing to deepening the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

At the reception, the leaders of Phu Quoc City and Yeonsu District signed a letter of intent on friendship and cooperation.
