Imports of phones and computers drop by $10 billion

Import turnover of two main groups of goods phones and components; computers, electronic products, and components in the first half of May decreased by $10 billion over the same period last year.

The total import turnover of the country in the first half of May reached $12.44 billion, up 1.7% (equivalent to $212 million) compared to the results in the second half of April 2023, according to the General Department of Customs. 

Import turnover of goods in the first period of May 2023 increased, mainly in the number of commodity groups such as crude oil increased by $101 million, equivalent to an increase of 40.3%; computers, electronic products, and components increased by $87 million, equivalent to 3%; machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts increased by $76 million, corresponding to an increase of 4.6%...

Although there was an upward trend in the first half of May, from the beginning of the year to May 15, import turnover still fell deeply.

Specifically, from the beginning of the year to the end of May 15, 2023, the total import turnover of the country reached $112.01 billion, down 18% (equivalent to $24.63 billion) compared to the same period in 2022.

In which, the number of commodity groups decreased sharply, such as phones and components decreased by $5.47 billion, equivalent to a decrease of 66.5%; computers, electronic products, and components decreased by $4.39 billion, corresponding to 13.4%; machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts decreased by $2.15 billion, equivalent to a decrease of 13.2%...

Thus, only 2 groups of phones and components—computers, electronic products, and components—have a turnover of $9.86 billion.

Data from the General Department of Customs shows that the import turnover of goods of FDI enterprises in the first period of May reached $8.18 billion, up 4% (equivalent to an increase of $317 million) compared to the April 2 period of 2023.

By the end of May 15, the imports of this group of enterprises reached $73.09 billion, down 18.1% (equivalent to $16.14 billion) over the same period in 2022, accounting for 65.3% of the total import turnover of the country.
