In a statement released on Wednesday, the Vietnamese government has warned that the country's state utility, EVN, will suffer losses of $2.75 billion this year if its retail electricity prices remain unchanged.

This would bring the total losses for EVN over the past two years to $3.96 billion. While Vietnam has sought to raise electricity prices to encourage investment in the power generation sector, the government has also been under pressure to keep inflation under control.

As a result, earlier this month, Vietnam raised the average floor price for retail electricity by 13.69%, which is expected to allow EVN to raise its prices.

However, any further price adjustments must take into account the impact on inflation, people's lives, and the macroeconomy, according to Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien.

Vietnam aims to keep inflation below 4.5% this year, with consumer prices in December 2022 rising 4.55% from a year earlier.
